Internet and Connectivity in Lake of the Woods

By Tanner Brown, Your Local Mountain REALTOR® ·

If you're thinking about living or working remotely from Lake of the Woods, internet connectivity is probably one of your top questions. I won't pretend it's the same as living in a city, but it's gotten dramatically better in the last few years. Here's the current landscape.

Starlink: The Game Changer

Starlink has genuinely transformed internet access in mountain communities like Lake of the Woods. Many residents now have reliable, high-speed satellite internet that handles video calls, streaming, and remote work without major issues. If you're buying up here with plans to work remotely, Starlink is likely your best option. There's an upfront equipment cost, but the monthly service has been reliable for most users I know.

Other Options

  • DSL: Available through some providers, but speeds are limited and depend heavily on your distance from the nearest hub. Fine for basic browsing and email, but may struggle with heavy video use.
  • Fixed wireless: Some local providers offer fixed wireless that can deliver better speeds than DSL. Coverage depends on line of sight to towers, which varies by location within the community.
  • Cellular hotspot: Can work as a backup. Coverage is spotty — Verizon tends to perform best in this area, but don't count on consistent service in every part of the community.

Tips for Staying Connected

  • Get Starlink set up early — there can be a wait for equipment depending on demand
  • Invest in a cell signal booster for your home
  • Keep a cellular hotspot as a backup connection
  • Battery backup for your router is essential — power outages mean no internet otherwise
  • If working remotely, test video conferencing during your peak hours before committing

Cell Phone Service

Cell coverage in Lake of the Woods varies by carrier and by your exact location in the community. Higher spots with less tree cover tend to get better signal. Verizon has historically been the strongest up here, but check your specific carrier before buying. I always recommend visiting a property with your phone and testing call quality, data speeds, and text messaging.

The Bigger Picture

Connectivity in mountain communities is improving every year. Starlink was the biggest leap forward, and fixed wireless providers continue to expand coverage. The lifestyle tradeoffs of living in a community like Lake of the Woods — the peace, the forest, the wildlife — increasingly come without the connectivity sacrifice that used to be part of the deal.

If internet is a deciding factor for you, let's talk about specific locations within the community that tend to have the best connectivity. I know which spots work well and which ones might be challenging. Learn more about this forested mountain community, or browse available properties on my buy page.
