Best Forest Trails Near Lake of the Woods

By Tanner Brown, Your Local Mountain REALTOR® ·

If hiking and trail access matter to you, Lake of the Woods is hard to beat. The community sits right near Los Padres National Forest, and within a short drive you've got access to trails ranging from easy, shaded walks to strenuous summit hikes. Here are some of my favorites.

Mt. Pinos Summit Trail

The most popular hike in the area. From the upper parking lot off Frazier Mountain Park Road, it's about 2 miles to the top of Mt. Pinos at 8,831 feet. The trail winds through Jeffrey pine forest and opens to sweeping views from the summit. On clear days, you can see for over a hundred miles. Moderate difficulty, family-friendly, and absolutely worth the trip.

Chumash Wilderness Trails

Beyond Mt. Pinos, the Chumash Wilderness offers more remote, less-traveled trails. The terrain is rugged, the scenery is dramatic, and you might have the trail to yourself. These hikes are longer and more demanding — bring plenty of water and be prepared for variable conditions.

Forest Road Walks

Not every outing needs to be a summit push. There are numerous forest roads in the area that make for excellent, easy walks through the pines. These are great for families with young kids, older adults, or anyone who just wants a peaceful ramble through the trees. Many of these roads are accessible right from the Lake of the Woods area.

Seasonal Considerations

  • Spring: Wildflowers and flowing streams. Trails may be muddy from snowmelt.
  • Summer: Best conditions, but bring sun protection at higher elevations. Start early to avoid afternoon heat.
  • Fall: Golden oaks, cooler temps, and fewer people. My favorite season to hike.
  • Winter: Snowshoes or cross-country skis open up the upper trails. Lower trails may be muddy or icy.

What to Bring

Regardless of season, bring water (there's none on most trails), layers (mountain weather changes fast), and sun protection. A National Forest Adventure Pass is required for parking at most trailheads. Cell service is limited to nonexistent, so tell someone your plan before you head out.

Why Trail Access Matters for Home Values

Properties with easy trail access tend to appeal to a specific — and growing — buyer demographic. People increasingly want to live where they can walk out their door and be in nature. Lake of the Woods offers that, and it's a genuine selling point when properties come to market.
