Trail Guide
Frazier Park sits at the crossroads of the best off-road terrain in the Frazier Mountain area. From beginner-friendly state park trails to the most technical routes in Southern California, it all starts here.
Frazier Mountain Trail
Moderate to DifficultA 4WD trail to the summit of Frazier Mountain featuring rock climbing sections, sweeping mountain views, and a historic fire lookout tower at the peak (tower is closed and stairs have been removed, but the structure remains). Cell service is available at the summit, making it a popular stop. From the top, experienced drivers can descend toward Hungry Valley for an extended off-road adventure.
Vehicle: 4WD with high clearance recommended. Rock climbing sections require careful tire placement.
Hungry Valley SVRA
Beginner to ExpertCalifornia's premier State Vehicular Recreation Area sits just south of Frazier Park off I-5. With 19,000 acres of OHV recreation, Hungry Valley offers trails for every skill level — from gentle fire roads for beginners to steep hill climbs and technical rock crawling for experts. Day use and camping are available, and the park is open year-round.
Vehicle: Varies by trail. Beginner trails accessible with stock 4WD vehicles. Expert trails require fully built rigs.
Lockwood/Miller OHV Trail Access
Black Diamond (Most Difficult)Frazier Park is the primary staging area and supply point for the famous Lockwood/Miller OHV Trail — a legendary 33.2-mile point-to-point route through the Los Padres National Forest. The Flying J Travel Center at I-5 Exit 205 is the common meeting point for groups before heading to the Lockwood Creek Trailhead. Stock up on fuel, food, and water in Frazier Park before hitting the trail.
Vehicle: Minimum 4WD, high clearance, aggressive off-road tires. Recommended: 35"+ tires, rear locker.
Los Padres National Forest Roads
Easy to ModerateVarious forest service roads accessible for 4WD exploration from Frazier Mountain Park Road. These routes wind through the Los Padres National Forest, offering scenic drives through pine forests, meadows, and mountain ridgelines. Perfect for those looking to explore at a more relaxed pace or scout new areas.
Vehicle: 4WD or high-clearance AWD recommended for most forest roads.
Trail Safety & Preparation
Check Gate Status
Trail gates have seasonal hours and closures. Always verify access before heading out — call the ranger district at (661) 245-3731.
Air Down Tires
Reduce tire pressure to 18-22 PSI on rocky terrain for better grip. Bring a portable compressor to air back up before highway driving.
Bring Water & Fuel
Stock up in Frazier Park before hitting the trails. Carry extra water, snacks, and a full tank of fuel — no services on the trail.
Recovery Gear
Carry tow straps, a shovel, and a quality jack. Never wheel alone on technical trails — always bring a buddy vehicle.
